This week marks Trustees Week, and we are celebrating the crucial role and invaluable work our trustees do behind the scenes at Women Leaders. Last year, the board was delighted to welcome Freddie Guilmard, CEO of The Red Thread Fellowship as a trustee so, we are sharing some insights from him:

 

What inspired you to join the board of Women Leaders as a trustee?

My inspiration came after attending the 2023 awards event, which opened my eyes to the profound impact Women Leaders has in promoting a diverse business community. I realised that while I had long admired the achievements of women across the city, I wasn’t fully engaged with the charity’s mission and continuous effort to expand the dialogue around equality and inclusion. I saw that everyone has a place at Women Leaders, and I wanted to be part of driving the conversation forward toward a more diverse and inclusive landscape.

 

As a man, what motivated you to join the board of trustees for a charity largely perceived to be aimed at women?

I have always been a champion of creating a diverse workforce, and Women Leaders presented an opportunity to contribute to a cause that aligns with my values and experience while enabling me to deepen my understanding. I believe that men have an important role to play in promoting gender equality and inclusion, and I’m proud to be a part of an organisation that recognises and celebrates this.

How do you see your role as a trustee contributing to the charity’s mission and vision?

As a trustee, I see my role as integral to promoting equal opportunities and celebrating diversity. It’s about ensuring that everyone has a place at the table. I believe that by bringing my experience in fostering diverse teams, I can help amplify the voices and roles of everyone, regardless of gender or background.

 

From your perspective, what is the most significant Women Leaders achievement?

One of the most significant achievements has been the development of programs like Allyship and Career Connect, which go beyond celebrating women and reflect the mission of the charity. These initiatives push for equality and inclusion, fostering leadership across the board. They emphasise that diverse teams working together can make a significant difference, enriching many lives and keeping the entire landscape balanced.

 

How do you think the role of a trustee contributes to a charity’s success and sustainability?

Trustees are pivotal in setting the strategic direction and ensuring the charity remains true to its values. We act as stewards, safeguarding the charity’s values and ensuring that we stay true to our mission. By bringing diverse perspectives to the board, we can make informed decisions that promote growth and resilience.

 

Looking ahead, what are your hopes and goals for Women Leaders, and how do you see the board’s role in achieving them?

In just under a decade, Women Leaders has collectively made significant strides in recognising outstanding women while also broadening its focus to include everyone who contributes to creating a diverse economy. Looking forward, I hope to see Women Leaders continue to expand its reach and influence and the trustees will play a pivotal role in this by supporting innovative programs and continuously advocating for equality and inclusion. We aim to close the gender gap and foster a business community that thrives on diversity.
