The Heart of Women Leaders: Celebrating Our Trusteese

Behind every event, every programme, and every celebration of women’s achievements at Women Leaders — from our annual awards to our Allyship programme and inspiring STEM initiatives like MK Innovates — there’s a group of people quietly working to make it all happen: our trustees.

They don’t often step into the spotlight, but their role is vital. Trustees help guide the charity, shape its vision, and ensure everything we do stays true to our mission of empowering women and promoting diverse leadership across our community.

But being a trustee is about so much more than governance. It’s about passion and purpose. It’s about a personal connection to the cause and a shared belief in the difference that Women Leaders can make.

For Hiran Odedra, joining the board was a natural step. “I first got involved when I nominated women for the awards a few years ago,” Hiran says.“I was so inspired by the charity and the other trustees that I wanted to be part of it too. As an EDI professional and coach, I’ve spent years helping women break down barriers and reach their potential. Becoming a trustee has given me the chance to do this in my own community, alongside women from so many different backgrounds and sectors.” For Hiran, it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience, and one that brings her work and her passion even closer to home.

Ruby Parmar, our vice chair, shares a similar story. For her, it started with inspiration.

“I was inspired by the incredible women leading the charity,” she explains, “and I’ve always had a strong desire to see women not just succeed but excel.”

Ruby sees trusteeship as a meaningful way to give back: “When you’ve been supported throughout your own leadership journey, it feels right to offer that support to others. Being a trustee is a serious commitment – it takes time, energy, and passion – but it’s worth it.” And it’s not a one-way street. “You give back, yes,” she says, “but you also gain so much. I’ve worked with an incredible group of people, and built friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Dr. Susan Izadkhasti brings her experience as a leader in STEM to the board. “I’ve always believed leadership isn’t about titles, it’s about impact,” she says. “For me, being a trustee is about using my experience and network to open doors for others, challenge stereotypes, and create opportunities — especially in spaces like STEM, where representation really matters.”

Leading initiatives such as the MK Innovates STEM Festival has shown Susan the power of inspiring the next generation. But being a trustee has also shaped her own growth. “This role has taught me that progress starts with authenticity — listening, collaborating, and lifting each other up. It’s helped me grow as a leader, but also as a mentor, advocate, and changemaker.”

Trusteeship is open to anyone who shares a passion for our mission — regardless of gender or background. It’s about the skills, insights, and commitment each person brings to the table.

When Freddie Guilmard joined the board last year, he saw an opportunity to actively support gender equality and inclusion.

“After attending the 2023 awards, I was blown away by the impact Women Leaders has in promoting a diverse business community,” Freddie says.

“Everyone has a role to play in creating equality, and I wanted to be part of an organisation that celebrates and encourages that.” Freddie views his role as helping to shape the future of the charity: “Trustees help set the strategic direction and make sure we stay true to our values. By bringing different perspectives together, we make decisions that are informed, inclusive, and forward-thinking.”

What unites each of our trustees is a sense of purpose — a desire to create opportunities, foster inclusion, and help others grow. But it’s also about what trusteeship gives back to those who take it on. It’s a chance to develop new skills, build connections, and see leadership in a whole new light. It’s about being part of something bigger than yourself and knowing you’re helping to make lasting change.

At Women Leaders, our trustees are the steady hands behind the scenes, helping us to grow, evolve, and make a difference. Their work reminds us that leadership isn’t just about standing in front – it’s about lifting others up and creating a community where everyone can shine.
