MK Innovates Stem Festival Q&A

MK Innovates STEM Festival Q&A

With MK Innovates a STEM Festival taking place later this week (24th and 25th October) Women Leaders are sharing more information about the event which was created to provide women and underrepresented groups with the resources, support, and inspiration needed to pursue STEM careers, addressing gaps in representation and fostering a more equitable industry.

Here’s everything you need to know…….

What is MK Innovates and what is its significance for underrepresented groups in STEM?

MK Innovates was founded in 2017 by the Women Leaders UK charity to engage more girls and women in STEM fields. Over time, its focus has expanded to include all students and adults seeking career changes, with particular emphasis on underrepresented groups such as females, BAME individuals, those from less privileged backgrounds, people with disabilities, and neurodiverse individuals. The STEM Festival provides an excellent platform for companies to showcase their dynamic offerings and company culture to attract a diverse future workforce.

Why is the STEM festival significant for these groups?

The STEM festival aims to provide structured insights into STEM careers and adequate support for teachers to prepare students for future roles. It offers a unique opportunity for underrepresented individuals to connect with supportive communities and industry leaders, thereby enhancing diversity in STEM fields.

Why are STEM skills so important to Milton Keynes?

STEM skills are crucial to Milton Keynes because a third of businesses within the city are classified as knowledge-based, relying heavily on innovation and technology. Ensuring that the local workforce is equipped with STEM skills while attracting a new generation is vital for maintaining competitiveness and fostering economic growth in the region.

How instrumental has Milton Keynes City Council been in the creation of MK Innovates a STEM Festival?

The City Council has been instrumental in the creation and ongoing success of the MK Innovates a STEM Festival. In 2017, the Council approached Women Leaders to organise the inaugural festival, underscoring their commitment to enhancing technology skills in Milton Keynes. This initiative has grown into a crucial event that inspires young minds in the region. The City Council remains a key partner in this effort, providing essential funding for school transport to ensure every student has the opportunity to participate, regardless of their school’s resources. This dedication highlights Milton Keynes City Council’s role in fostering a technologically adept future for the community, making it an invaluable ally for local businesses invested in the area’s growth and development.

What are the benefits of connecting with the participating organisations at the STEM Festival, and what opportunities might attendees uncover?

We are delighted with the support we have received from organisations across the city, including Santander, NiftyLift, Oracle Red Bull Racing, the City Council and so many more. Their involvement demonstrates the reliance companies place on STEM skills, and they will be offering advice on CV writing, interview tips, job opportunities, and insights into company cultures. This interaction will help attendees understand the skills needed in the industry and explore potential career paths.

Attendees might uncover job openings, internships, or mentorship opportunities, and gain valuable industry knowledge that could guide their career decisions.

How does MK Innovates foster a more inclusive and diverse environment in the STEM community?

The STEM festival actively reaches out to underrepresented groups, creating a platform where diverse voices are heard and celebrated, encouraging a culture of inclusion within the STEM community.

How does this inclusivity benefit the STEM community?

Inclusivity brings diverse perspectives, fostering innovation and creativity. It also helps address skill shortages by tapping into a broader talent pool, ultimately strengthening the STEM fields.

MK Innovates STEM Festival is on this Thursday and Friday at Unity Place – is it too late to get involved?

Not at all! The first day of this year’s STEM Festival (Thursday 24th) will be aimed at adults interested in pursuing a career in STEM. They will get the chance to meet over 40 exhibiting organisations and explore opportunities. It’s free to attend and all they need to do is register on Eventbrite.

On the second day, Friday, schools from across the region will attend to meet professional experts in STEM and organisations with activities which are set to support and encourage STEM aspirations.
